The Pope on Intellectual Property

As mentioned by Jeff Tucker, in the Pope’s new encyclical, Caritas in veritate, he writes:

On the part of rich countries there is excessive zeal for protecting knowledge through an unduly rigid assertion of the right to intellectual property, especially in the field of health care.

As Jeff writes, “I wish it had gone further to reject the whole idea of a IP but this is an excellent statement as far as it goes.”

I’m not a Catholic, but I was reading the “Encyclical” and found some things I agreed with and some others very disturbing, particularly number 67 where he called giving “new teeth” to the United Nations.

    He also says this:

“My predecessor John Paul II drew attention to this question in Centesimus Annus, when he spoke of the need for a system with three subjects: the market, the State and civil society[92]. ”

As someone who has drifted from neo-con, to libertarian, to now almost full-fledged anarchist, my question to the Pope is, “why do we need the State?”
